Sikinos (Σίκινος) is a small barren dry island E of Folegandros and W of Ios. Sikinos has an area of 41 km2 and is not heavily populated, it is relative underdeveloped. It has been recently declared an "Ecosystem of European Importance" because it hosts wild pigeons, rare cat vipers and sand snakes, black headed hawks, sea birds, and an occasional monk seal.
The island was named after Sikinos the son of Thoas, who was banished from Limnos, and was set adrift in a chest. The chest was washed here and Thoas was recovered by a sea nymph.
Sikinos was famous in antiquity for its wine.

Skala or Alopronia (Αλοπρόνια) is the harbor and only anchorage in Sikinos. The harbour is shallow with very limited room to manoeuvre and little space for yachts. In June 2009 there were depths of only 2.5 meters in the approaches. Larger yachts beware! Limited mooring options are either alongside the small quay or anchoring off, although the harbour is shallow and very rocky.
Warning: There are lots of rocks on west side of the little harbor.
