Attika Coast (Coast of Athens)
Background
The coast of Attika or Attica (Αττική) is the coast of Athens and the playground of the Athenians. It is the most crowded are in Greece, full of large ships, fast ferries, motor cruisers, fishing boats, and sailboats. All the marinas are full with long waiting lists. It will be hard for a visiting yacht to find a berth here.

Warning: Approaching the coast of Attika from the south you have to cross the shipping lanes. Cross them, if possible, vertically. Do monitor your VHF but most large ships, including ones of the Greek Navy, rarely respond to a hail.

Anchorages
Anavissos (Ανάβυσος) [37° 43.2' N 23° 56.4' E] is a large bay NW of Cape Sounio. Here there is better protection from the meltemi than in Sounio. It best to anchor off the small harbor in 3-5 m. Holding is reasonable. I have weathered a bad meltemi here after I was forced to depart from Sounio in the middle of the night.
Warning: Night Approaches are very hard because the flashing Green light is blanked by the high intensity highway lights.
Sounio
Just to the W of Cape Sounio (Σούνιο) there is a cove [37° 39.2' N 24° 01.4' E] where you can anchor. It is usually crowded and it is not a very secure but it is a great place to anchor while visiting the famous temple of Poseidon a 10 minute walk up the hill.
Anchor in 3-5 m depth. The bottom is weed and the holding is bad. Look for a patch of sand to the N of the cove.
Danger: With a strong meltemi there are violent gusts and the anchorage may not be tenable. It is best to go to Anavissos rather then risk collision with another drifting yacht.
Offshore Islands
Fleves
Fleves (Φλέβες) is a small island off the Athens resort of Vouliagmeni in the Saronic Gulf. There is only one safe anchorage [37° 46.2' N 023° 45.5' E] at the SW side of the island. It affords reasonable shelter from the meltemi and considering the proximity to the greater Athens area is a pleasant and peaceful anchorage. Anchor at the S side of the cove at about 10 m, good holding in weed and sand.
