The jetty in Silivri harbour - Click for larger view

Silivri is a commercial harbour on the north shore of the Sea of Marmara in Turkey, 36 miles west of Istanbul and a similar distance east of the commercial harbour of Tekirdag. There is no provision for yachts in the harbour and visitors here must find a place wherever they can alongside the rough central jetty. Shelter is reasonable from the prevailing N/NE winds, although a yacht will usually be blown onto the jetty. In the absence of a suitable space to moor, there is a sheltered anchorage in the bay to the north of the harbour.

Silivri is one of the harbours for which the Turkish Transportaion Ministry is currently (March 2011) inviting tenders to establish a proper marina operation.

Local Weather

Winds along the north coast of the Sea of Marmara are generally from N/NE, which can give some excellent sailing in flat water between the Dardanelles and Istanbul. Winds tend to be at their strongest in mid to late afternoon.

See also Turkey.

Approach and Navigation

In the approach from W or S the harbour breakwater is visible from some distance off. In the approach from E, the headland of Kaba Burnu obscures the harbour until close in, when the white light structure (unlit) on the southern ‘spur’ of the breakwater will be visible. The harbour is entered from WNW. Depths in the entrance are 4.5 – 5.5 metres close to the starboard marker but shelve to 2.0 metres or less towards the port marker.

Berthing Options

The western section of the breakwater, shown as alongside moorings in some (out of date) pilot books is now totally enclosed and is reserved for use by purse seine fishing boats. Visiting yachts must find a berth on the central jetty, oriented E/W from the shore. Usually it will be necessary to go on the windward (northern) side, since there are very few mooring rings on the southern side and (during May to September) the more sheltered leeward side is occupied by laid up fishing vessels. The quay is rather rough and quite high and – inconveniently – the top has been resurfaced, with the result that the bollards and mooring rings are deeply recessed and awkward to access. Depths along the quay are 4.0 – 4.5 metres. A canvas hull protector is a useful asset here, as fenders will scrub your hull in the prevailing winds.

Marinas & Yacht Clubs

None.

Anchorages

It is possible to anchor in the bay north of the harbour. The bay shallows for quite some distance offshore, and it will be necessary to anchor a fair way out in 5.0 – 6.0 metres. The holding is good in sand.

Offshore Islands and Groups

None.

Yacht Repairs and Services

Marine Stores

None.

Repairs/Yards

None.

Fuel, Water, & Electricity

None. There are some water and electricity points at the root of the jetty, but they are too far from the areas where a yacht will be able to berth.

Tourism

The new fish quay in Silivri harbour - Click for larger view

Silivri has little to offer as a tourist destination, although in 2011 a new fish quay opened on the southern side of the harbour, with several fish stalls and a string of fish restaurants, all of which compete for business and (for once) offer sensible prices.

Grocery & Supply Stores

BIM and Dia supermarkets in the town. BIM is straight ahead from the jetty and on the left hand side of the road.

Eateries

Numerous fish restaurants on the fish quay. For meat, try the Silivri Koftecesi immediately east of the fish quay.

Internet/WiFi

Internet cafes only.

Laundry

None.

Motorbike & Car Rentals

Garbage Disposal

Bins up the road from the jetty.

Transportation

Transportation (local and/or international)

Routes/Passages To/From

Silivri is a convenient port of call if transiting the north coast of the Sea of Marmara between the Dardanelles and Istanbul.
