Salamis

Salamis is an island that lies just to the west of Piraeus the main port of Athens. Is is known for the Sea Battle that took place in the straits between the island and the mainland in 480 BC. Salamis is the birth place of Euripides, the famous tragical of classical Athens whose plays still resonate today.
On Salamis is the main Greek navy base and anchoring in many bays in the island is prohibited.
Caution: The water around Salamis is very polluted.
