The town and marina of Chiavari are situated five miles SE of Rapallo on the W bank of the Entella River. The much larger marina of Lavagna lies on the E bank half a mile away. Although less attractive than its neighbouring towns of Portofino and Rapallo, Chiavari nevertheless has some interesting 13th century arcaded buildings in the town centre, some impressive palazzos and a 12th century mediaeval castle. Chiavari Marina offers good shelter, although entry should not be attempted in strong S winds in view of the shallow entrance and the dangerous swell that prevails in these conditions (see marina entry).
Weather
The prevailing winds along the western part of the Ligurian coast during the summer are a SW or SE seabreeze, which rarely gets up much above force 4-5. Along the eastern part of the coast, the winds tend to come more from W or NW and are again usually little more than moderate. While infrequent, gales are not unknown during the spring and early summer and are typically caused by depressions further west in the Golfe du Lion which bring strong N winds as they move further E. In winter, the tramontana, a strong N wind off the Alps, is more frequent, although the libecchio is a strong SW wind that can affect the whole of the Ligurian coast and blow for several days, causing heavy seas. Sources for weather forecasts:
- There is a continuous (computerised voice) weather forecast on VHF 68 - first in Italian and then followed with an English translation
- The same forecast is given in Italian and English on VHF coastal stations following a notification on channel 16
- Navtex weather forecasts are broadcast from stations at La Garde (Toulon), Roma and Cagliari (Sardinia)

Anchorages
In settled weather a yacht can anchor off the beach immediately W of the marina entrance. At the head of the bay, clear of the small craft moorings. Depths here are 3.0 - 5.0 metres and the bottom is sand. Shelter is adequate from NE round to SE but the anchorage is exposed to winds from all other directions.

Tourism
Chiavari lacks the attractions of some of its more illustrious neighbours, but the old centre is interesting to walk around, not least for its 13th century arcaded buildings. The town also boast a 17th century neoclassical cathedral, Santuario di Nostra Signora dell'Orto, with some attractive frescoes. The Palace of Justice is a 19th century confection built on the site of the mediaeval town hall. The old town also contains three palaces, the 13th century Palazzo dei Portici Neri (Palace with the Black Porticos) and Palazzo Maschio Torriglia and the 17th century Palazzo Rocca, now a museum.
