The harbour of Sant’ Agata lies on the N coast of Sicily, 32 miles E of Cefalu and 10 miles SW of Capo d'Orlando. Primarily constructed as a base for the hydrofoils serving the Aeolian Islands, it consists of a long curving breakwater protecting the harbour from winds from NW round to S. It is completely open to winds from NE round to SE. Two pontoons have been installed inside the breakwater which can accommodate yachts on passage along the N coast of Sicily.

Local Weather
The prevailing wind on the north coast of Sicily during the summer is a NW seabreeze, which rarely gets up much above force 4-5. While infrequent, gales are not unknown during the spring and early summer and send a heavy swell down onto the north coast. In winter, the gregale is a strong NE wind that can affect the whole of the island and blow for several days.
Sources for weather forecasts:
- There is a continuous (computerised voice) weather forecast on VHF 68 - first in Italian and then followed with an English translation.
- The same forecast is given in Italian and English on VHF coastal stations following a notification on channel 16.
- Navtex weather forecasts are broadcast from stations at Roma, Cagliari (Sardinia) and Augusta (Sicily).
The long breakwater is visible from some distance off. Extreme care is needed when entering, especially from W, as hydrofoils leave at speed. The two yacht pontoons extend E and NNE from the breakwater.
Check-in facilities (for Customs and Immigration)
Berth on either pontoon, wherever space is available. The northernmost pontoon is more suited to larger yachts. The southernmost pontoon is in shallower water and is operated by Sicilmarine srl and the northernmost by Yachting Management. There are a total of 110 berths on the two pontoons. Depths at the berths range from 2.0 to 6.0 metres. Maximum length 30 metres.
