La Linea, on the border between Spain and Gibraltar, has long played second fiddle to its larger neighbour to the south, Gibraltar, where marine activities are concerned. That situation is to change dramatically in March 2010 with the planned opening of the huge new Alcaidesa Marina and residential development just a short 5-minute walk north of Gibraltar airport.

Alcaidesa Marina
This marina will eventually offer a total of around 618 berths on finger pontoons for yachts of sizes ranging from 8.0 up to 50.0 metres. The development also includes a 265-room hotel, convention centre and a wide range of retail and catering outlets. A large hard standing area and repair facility is also planned.
The marina is divided into 3 main areas: an area for sport and pleasure boats, a commercial marina with a slipway and dry dock, and lastly a commercial and recreational area. When the development is complete the port will have a land surface area of 134,255 m2 and a sheltered water sheet of 139,760 m2 which will accommodate 624 berths for crafts ranging from 8 to 50 metres in length, and with capacity for 200 crafts of various sizes in the dry dock. The plans designed also include covered areas of more than 15,000 m2 for commercial and leisure as well as nautical use. In addition to this, around 1000 parking spaces will be created.
The Marina differs from its competitors along the coastline of Andalusia in that it boasts a water and electricity supply tower for every two moorings, with independent meters and systems for pre-payment and payment based on consumption. The berths are wider than usual, being designed to accommodate modern boats, and Wi-Fi internet access is available as well as a television connection on pontoons P10, P11 and P12. All of the pontoons can be accessed independently via locking systems activated by proximity cards to allow easy access for users, and at the same time to guarantee the security of the boats.
- Berths
- The Marina will be equipped with service turrets providing water and electricity supply for all berths. There will be a Wi-Fi Internet service at the Marina, as well as TV and telephone services. Access to the jetties will be through automatic gates. For yachts of less than 30 metres in length, the jetties will be floating jetties, with fingers and pilots. For larger yachts the jetties will be fixed concrete jetties with vehicular access.
- Shipyard
- To be equipped with a crane, travel-lift system, pressure jet cleaning, dry marina and showers.
- Dry Dock
- Storage for boat from 6 to 10 meters on a rental basis for winter usage.
- Repairs
- The Alcaidesa Yacht Marina has earmarked an area of more than 17,000 m2 for the repair of every conceivable kind of vessel; a unique facility because of its size and services. The Marina will also have a specialised workshop for any kind of task, not to mention, of course, carpentry, painting & decorating, communications and other services.
- Chandlers
- The Marina includes an area for premises specialising in nautical supplies, both for spare parts and any other necessary sailing requirements, covering a total surface area of almost 8,000 m2.
- Parking Facilities
- A total of more than one thousand parking bays are distributed both in the area reserved for Marina clients, for whom access is available through a security checkpoint, and in the commercial area also serving the recreational and leisure areas.
- Communal Services
- The following services will be provided both in the shoreline commercial and nautical areas and for those actually within the marina basin:
- Garden maintenance, street cleaning and cleaning of communal areas, rubbish collection;
- Irrigation and fire hydrants;
- Maintenance of communal facilities: CCTV, access, street lighting, telecommunications, public address system, Wi-Fi and others;
- Closed circuit television system for greater security;
- Security surveillance and control;
- Domestic household refuse collection;
- Health & hygiene: pest control;
- Miscellaneous.
