Lavagna
| |
| |
The town and marina of Lavagna are situated six miles SE of Rapallo on the E bank of the Entella River in Italy. Although the town is not particularly distinguished, Lavagna Marina offers good shelter in most winds. However, an entry should never be attempted in strong onshore winds in view of the dangerous swell that prevails in these conditions (see marina entry). Lavagna is a good base for getting major repairs carried out in view of the numerous boatyards here.

Weather
The prevailing winds along the western part of the Ligurian coast during the summer are a SW or SE sea breeze, which rarely gets up much above force 4-5. Along the eastern part of the coast, the winds tend to come more from W or NW and are again usually little more than moderate. While infrequent, gales are not unknown during the spring and early summer and are typically caused by depressions further west in the Golfe du Lion which bring strong N winds as they move further E. In winter, the tramontana, a strong N wind off the Alps, is more frequent, although the libecchio is a strong SW wind that can affect the whole of the Ligurian coast and blow for several days, causing heavy seas.
Sources for weather forecasts:
- There is a continuous (computerized voice) weather forecast on VHF 68 - first in Italian and then followed with an English translation
- The same forecast is given in Italian and English on VHF coastal stations following a notification on channel 16
- Navtex weather forecasts are broadcast from stations at La Garde (Toulon), Roma and Cagliari (Sardinia)

The harbour of Lavagna lies in the middle of a plain surrounded on both sides by mountains. The long outer breakwater, oriented NW/SE, is visible on the approach. Entry to the Lavagna Marina is from SE. Depths in the entrance are 5.5 - 6.0 metres. A heavy swell develops with strong onshore winds and entry and exit are dangerous in these conditions.

Anchorages
In settled weather only, a yacht can anchor off the beach E of the marina entrance. Depths here are 5.0 - 8.0 metres and the bottom is sand/mud. Shelter is just adequate from NW round to E but any strong winds or onshore winds make it untenable.

Tourism
Lavagna has little to offer in the way of tourism, although the 13th century Sanctuary of Nostra Signora del Ponte and its nearby bridge are worth a visit. The Torre del Borgo is a squat mediaeval tower which now houses the local art gallery.
