Kioni
| |
The village and harbour of Kioni lie on the NE coast of the island of Ithaca in the Ionian Sea of Greece, a mile S of the tiny harbour of Frikes and four miles N of the island’s main harbour of Vathi. The harbour is very popular with visiting yachts and flotillas and its quay is often packed to bursting by mid-afternoon in the season. The village itself is most attractive, tucked into a wooded cleft at the foot of a deep valley and partially protected from E by a rocky promontory lined with ruined windmills. Shelter in the harbour is good in the prevailing W/NW winds – although there are gusts down into the bay – but poor in strong easterly winds, when a yacht is better heading for Vathi.

There are no hazards in the approach to Kioni. The inlet can be identified from sea by the row of three ruined windmills on the headland at the S end of the bay. With the afternoon seabreezes, there can sometimes be strong gusts when entering the bay. The yacht quay lies at the top of the inlet, behind a stubby breakwater with a starboard marker on it extending from the N shore. Depths in the entrance are 10 - 12 metres and along the quay around 2.0 – 2.25 metres (although 4.0 – 5.0 metres where your keel will lie).
Check-in facilities (for Customs and Immigration)
Vathi is the nearest port of entry. See relevant port page for details.
Berthing Options
There three main berthing options in Kioni, depending on a yacht’s draft and time oif arrival:
Yacht Quay
The main yacht quay extends along the N side of the harbour and can accommodate 20 - 25 yachts on anchor moor back to the quay here in depths ranging from 2.0 – 2.25 metres along its length (although 4.0 – 5.0 metres where your keel will lie). The holding is moderate in soft mud and weed and it can sometimes require two or three attempts to make sure it is holding. Shelter on the quay is good from the prevailing NW winds but the quay is exposed to any strong winds from E or SE might well become untenable if they are very strong. Mooring is to iron staples plus a few concrete bollards. The innermost part of this quay is shallow and in any case occupied by fishing boat moorings.
Breakwater
If arriving after 1600 (see photo of sign), a couple of yachts can lie alongside the inside of the breakwater, where the depths range from 2.25 at the root to 6.0 metres at the outer end. Mooring is to iron staples and/or concrete bollards. Shelter here is better in E winds, but would probably still be untenable if they were very strong.
W Quay
There is room for some 6 – 8 yachts to moor stern or bows-to the shallow quay on the W side of the harbour and this is often the only option for a yacht arriving late. Depths are too shallow to go close in (less than a metre), so yachts need to drop anchor in 6.0 – 7.0 metres and take long lines ashore. There are iron staples on the quay and stainless steel mooring rings in the rocks.
Marinas & Yacht Clubs
None.
Anchorages
In settled weather, it is possible to anchor with a line ashore in any of the small coves along the S shore of the bay. Depths in the coves are mostly 6.0 – 10.0 metres and the holding is mostly good in sand and weed. They are all, however, exposed in strong northerly winds.
