The bay of Stobrec is easily identified on the approach from the village houses clustered on the peninsula. A rough breakwater extends for a short distance on the W side of the bay. There are rocky ledges extending 50 metres off the peninsula, which should be given a generous clearance if approaching from W. The breakwater itself has some damaged sections extending underwater from the visible end and this should be given a clearance on the approach of at least 100 metres. | The bay of Stobrec is easily identified on the approach from the village houses clustered on the peninsula. The small village and resort of Stobrec lies at the mouth of the river Zrnovnica on the Adriatic coast of Croatia four miles E of the harbour of Split and 10 miles NW of the small harbour of Omis. Built on a scenic peninsula during the Hellenic period, the town still bears some remains of its former Greek defensive walls. The town’s other claim to fame is as the location for the nearby discovery of a sarcophagus inscription dating from the 3rd century AD and recording the achievements of Lucius Artorius Castus, a Roman commander formerly based in Britain and, according to some sources, the inspiration for the legend of King Arthur. The bay of Stobrec offers a good anchorage except in strong southerlies and the bay itself is most attractive.
Local Weather
Diurnal winds along the coast are mostly moderate during the summer months, predominantly from NW and rarely exceeding force 4/5. At night, katabatic winds off the mountains are a feature of some of the harbours along the NE Adriatic coast. During early spring and (especially) autumn conditions can be more unsettled, occasionally accompanied by violent thunderstorms - luckily of short duration - with winds of 30-35 knots or more and vicious, steep seas. In the winter the sudden, violent N wind off the mountains, the bora, is much to be feared, especially along the Velebitski channel. It tends to blow less strongly S of Zadar.
Equally prevalent in winter - although not uncommon in summer - is the scirocco, a S/SE wind that blows up from North Africa, usually in advance of a depression moving E across the Mediterranean. Unlike the bora, the scirocco only occasionally exceeds gale force, but is still a phenomenon to be wary of, especially if on a lee coast.
For sources of weather forecasting, see Croatia.
