| |
The bay of Igrane lies on the Adriatic coast of Croatia, four miles SE of the harbour of Podgora and 12 miles NW of the small harbour and anchorage of Gradac. The island of [[Hvar} is situated eight miles due W of the bay. Igrane is a sleepy village with a modest tourism trade and a fine sandy beach. Visiting yachts can anchor in the bay in 6.0 - 8.0 metres in settled weather, but Igrane is completely open to winds from SW round to E.
Weather
Diurnal winds along the coast are mostly moderate during the summer months, predominantly from NW and rarely exceeding force 4/5. At night, katabatic winds off the mountains are a feature of some of the harbours along the NE Adriatic coast. During early spring and (especially) autumn conditions can be more unsettled, occasionally accompanied by violent thunderstorms - luckily of short duration - with winds of 30-35 knots or more and vicious, steep seas. In the winter the sudden, violent N wind off the mountains, the bora, is much to be feared, especially along the Velebitski channel. It tends to blow less strongly S of Zadar.
Equally prevalent in winter - although not uncommon in summer - is the scirocco, a S/SE wind that blows up from North Africa, usually in advance of a depression moving E across the Mediterranean. Unlike the bora, the scirocco only occasionally exceeds gale force, but is still a phenomenon to be wary of, especially if on a lee coast.

Islands
There are no dangers in the approach from N. If approaching from S, note that there is a rocky shoal inshore 1.5 miles SE of the bay. The village church on the hill behind the harbour has a conspicuous square tower.
Berthing Options
Visiting yachts will normally have to anchor off in 6.0 - 8.0 metres, clear of the swimming area. The holding is good in sand and mud. The anchorage becomes uncomfortable in strong winds from any direction and untenable in strong southerlies.
It may be possible to tie up alongside on the inside of the short pier on the W side of the bay if it is clear. Depths along the pier range from 4.0 metres at the end to 2.0 metres at the root. There is a tiny harbour just N of the pier, which is only suitable for small day boats.
