The Republic of South Korea has an interesting and bloody history, but is now regarded as a modern democracy. South Korea hosted the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, and in 2010 completed a free trade agreement with the European Union. The national sport is Tae Kwon Do, a form of martial art.
