Society Islands (French Polynesia) Cruising Guide
The Society Islands are a group of islands in the south Pacific, administratively part of French Polynesia. The archipelago is generally believed to have been named by Captain James Cook in honor of the Royal Society, sponsor of the first British scientific survey of the islands; however, Cook states in his journal that he called the islands Society "as they lay contiguous to one another"
Islands in the Group
- Bora Bora (Port of entry)
- Huahine (Port of entry)
- Maupiti
- Moorea
- Raiatea (Port of entry)
- Tahaa
- Tahiti (Port of entry)
Weather
The overall climate is hot and tropical, with drier conditions between April and November, and hotter and wetter conditions between December and March. There are occasional cyclones during the wet season.
GRIB data and Fleet Code data covering the Society Islands is available through Saildocs and other services -- see the Weather page for details.
A generalised South Pacific weather forecast from the Fiji Meterological Service may be found here or by sending an email containing send nadi.sopac to [email protected]. See the Weather page for more information.
Obtaining text or voice forecasts of the local weather conditions in the Society Islands is difficult if you do not speak French. There was an indication in one of the cruising guides that an English language forecast was given on a particular VHF station but I failed to hear anything on that station at the appropriate times.

Suggested Circuit Through the Group
Generally cruisers will arrive in the Society Islands from the east (or occasionally from the south). That makes Tahiti a suitable first stop. After obtaining the necessary clearance in Tahiti, the islands can be traversed in the order Moorea - Huahine - Raiatea - Tahaa - Bora Bora.
