The small marina of Le Bocche de Gallipari lies a mile N of the coastal village of Badolato Marina on the Ionian coast of Italy. The marina lies conveniently about 25 miles N of Rocella Ionica and would make a useful port of call for yachts cruising the coast between Rocella Ionica and Crotone. However, it has been silted for several years and although recent reports (July 2010) suggest that it has now been dredged and re-opened it is only suitable at present for shallow draught vessels. If further dredging is carried out, the marina may become suitable for smaller yachts to use.
Local Weather
During the summer the prevailing winds in the Ionian are light to moderate SW or SE seabreezes. In spring and autumn northerly winds are more frequent and can quickly rise to near gale force, especially in the lee of high mountain ranges. Winds in summer are generally light from the Straits of Messina until reaching the Golfo di Squillace between Rocella Ionica and Le Castella. With anything W in the wind, it tends to funnel down here over the mountains of southern Calabria, bringing strong gusts and raising an uncomfortable sea. The conditions to avoid, however, when cruising this part of the Ionian coast are strong southerlies. The harbours here are few and far between and none of them are really safe to enter in such conditions.
Sources for weather information:
- There is a continuous (computerised voice) weather forecast on VHF 68 - first in Italian and then followed with an English translation
- The same forecast is given in Italian and English on VHF coastal stations following a notification on channel 16
- Navtex weather forecasts are broadcast from stations at Roma, Cagliari (Sardinia) and Augusta (Sicily)

The entrance channel is reportedly only dredged to a depth of around 1.0 - 1.5 metres to allow small fishing and motor boats to use the marina. Try telephoning on: +39 338 8701702 or Email to ascertain the current position.
Berthing options
The marina has space for around 300 vessels of up to 16 metres on five pontoons and associated quays. However, the problem is access, as the channel repeatedly silts and has only recently been reported as partially cleared. Depths in the marina are 3.0 - 3.5 metres (assuming entry is possible). No facilities at present in the marina.
