Ria de Ferrol

| |
The Ria de Ferrol is situated on the coast of NW Spain around 10 miles NE of La Coruna and immediately N of the Ria de Betanzos. The ria is little more than a mile-wide bay with a canalized river, the Rio de Viveiro, flowing into it. Basically a deep, nine-mile long fiord, the ria's attractions as a sheltered harbour have long been recognised and today Ferrol is one of the Spanish navy's most important bases. It is also an important commercial harbour serving the needs of the wide range of industrial enterprises in the city of Ferrol. As such, the ria has fewer attractions for the cruising yachtsman than most of the other rias. However, it is possible to berth in the small marina located in one of the basins of the commercial harbour and there are several possible anchorages along the shores of the ria (although it has to be said none of them are especially attractive).

The entrance is free from dangers but can be difficult to spot in poor visibility. A long breakwater extending SSE from Cabo Priorino Chico on the N side of the entrance is conspicuous once close in.

Marinas & Yacht Clubs
Club Marina Ferrol
A small visiting yacht may be able to find space in the marina of the Club Marina Ferrol, located in a small basin between the two much larger basin of the commercial port. However, note that the maximum length is only 9.0 metres, so this would not suit larger yachts. It offers 250 berths for small yachts up to 9 metres in depths of up to 5.0 metres. Berthing is on finger pontoons. However, the marina is usually crammed full of local boats owned by members of the club and the Club Naval de Ferrol, so one should not assume a space will be available.

Anchorages
There are several small coves along the N and S coasts of the ria. Most of the ones on the N side are industrialized or otherwise built up. There are several along the S coast, however, where a yacht can anchor in suitable depths. Shelter in all of them is moderate to good but poor in northerlies.

Tourism
Ferrol is not a tourist destination – unless you happen to be keen on naval warships. The town is largely modern with few notable buildings and really the best views of the ria are from a yacht looking south.
