An online cruising guide for yachts that are sailing to Mauritius in the Indian Ocean.
Overview
The island of Mauritius (L’île Maurice) is a small (2,040 sq kms), multicultural island in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar and southeast of the Seychelles. Mauritius also controls Rodrigues Island and the remote Agalega and Cargados Garayos (Saint Brandon) islands, with a total population of 1.2 million for the whole group.
Cruising the region
Rodrigues, Mauritius, and Reunion are important stopping points for yachts crossing the Indian Ocean from east to west, with South Africa as a destination.

Arrival/Departure procedures
Clearance must be done in Port Louis. Yachts may then move to Grand Baie if they wish but may have to return to Port Louis for outward clearance.
Clearing out of Mauritius requires that you purchase a customs clearance form from the Chamber of Commerce office in Port Louis. You must then buy the relevant stamps from the post office that will be affixed to the form by Customs.
Immigration
- The official Republic of Mauritius website provides an excellent, clear statement of visa requirements by nationality.
- Cruisers who arrive in Mauritius aboard a yacht (and leave on the same yacht), do not require a visa.
- Many nationals do not require visas. Depending on nationality, the length of stay allowed varies from 15 days to 3 months.
- Citizens of Algeria, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Yemen, Afghanistan and Liberia, require a visa before travelling to Mauritius, even if only "in transit".
- To extend a stay beyond three months, you must apply for a visa in advance and provide good reasons for the extension.
Customs
- Firearms and ammunition MUST be declared on arrival.
- You are NOT allowed to import fresh fruit from Asia (east of 60°E -including India and Pakistan), sugar cane, plants and fresh vegetables.
- Personal medicinal drugs must be covered by a prescription. Scheduled drugs, such as tranquillisers, morphine and other strong painkillers require prior authorisation before import. (Be sure to declare these to Customs)
- PETS: An advance permit is required from the Ministry of Agriculture & Environment for all pets. A health certificate from the country of origin is also required. See the "Vet Services" section on the Ministry of Agriculture Website.
All pets aboard must be declared on arrival and must not be allowed ashore until cleared by Customs.
