Mediawiki engine upgrade
I wonder if there is any possibility of an upgrade of Mediawiki engine on this site to a recent version? I know this might sound quite blunt, but there is at least a couple of reasons behind this:
- A recent version of Mediawiki would allow to install some extensions (the most notable are ParserFunctions and Lua scripting) which would allow:
- to make helper templates like Coord more flexible
- to create templates which would bring some more structure into an article source, control its formatting and allow to get rid of error prone repetitive typing (see, for example, Template:Listing at Wikivoyage)
- The currently installed version is not compatible with Mediawiki's tool called Parsoid, which in its turn does not allow to pack the content of this wiki for offline use (Talk:Nautical_Software#Kiwix)
- Perhaps yet another reason for an upgrade is the VisualEditor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:VisualEditor http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/VisualEditor) -- as they describe it "a way to edit pages without needing to learn wikitext markup". A tool which apparently lowers a bar for a lesser experienced user to start making input.

Vadim, this sounds interesting. Presumably it would also resolve the problems we are currently experiencing with the rich editor. A full software upgrade is definitely above my pay grade (if you'll forgive the pun), but maybe Istioploos can direct your suggestion to the right quarter.

- Thanks Gordon, Istioploos has suggested that I should contact Andy R on this matter which I shall do shortly --Vadp 17:23, 10 February 2015 (GMT)
