Cuxhaven is an independent town and is situated on the shore of the North Sea at the mouth of the Elbe River. Cuxhaven is home to an important fisherman's wharf and ship registration point for Hamburg, Germany as well as the Kiel Canal until 2008. Administratively, it forms a homonymous quarter of the city of Hamburg, Germany. This quarter includes the nearby uninhabited islands Scharhörn and Nigehörn. The distance to Hamburg center is about 120 km.
During low tide Neuwerk can be reached on foot or by horse carriages from Cuxhaven, at other times by ship.
- The smaller islands Scharhörn and Nigehörn are bird sanctuaries, closed to the public. All three islands and the Wadden Sea around them form the Hamburg Wadden Sea National Park.
