Passages between Athens Region and Rhodes - Marmaris
Athens to Rhodes - Marmaris | |
MORE notes about the passage |
Introduction
The SE passage from the Athens Region to Rhodes and Marmaris is long and easy with predominately favorable winds and plenty of stopover opportunities.
The opposite NW passage from Rhodes and Marmaris to the Athens Region with predominately contrary winds is harder, longer, and with longer distances between possible stopovers.
Climate & Weather Information
See Aegean Weather.
Weather Windows
In general, the best sailing in the Aegean Sea is during the period from late May to mid October. But this does not preclude earlier in the Spring or later in the Autumn. Sailing in the winter months can be problematic due to stronger, more volatile, and less predictable weather.

Route/Suggested Stopovers
SE Going to Rhodes & Marmaris
A good portion of this passage is similar to the Southern Route East Going of the Passages between Athens Region and Samos - Kusadasi.
- The first convenient stopover is Fikiada in Kythnos 37°24.7′N, 24°23′E which is 44 nM WNW from Kalamaki Marina 37°54.7′N, 23°42.0′E or 78 nM from the Corinth Canal 37°54.91′N, 23°0.61′E. For alternative stopovers see Southern Route East Going (step 1).
- The second attractive stop is Finikas in Syros 37°23.5′N, 24°52.5′E which is 33 nM SW from Fikiada.
- From Finikas sail 21 nM W to the delightful South Bay 37°23′N, 25°14.3′E of the uninhabited little island of Rhinia.
- Then, sail SE to Dendro Donousa 37°05.7′N, 25°48.2′E which is 33 nM from Rhinia.
- And from Donousa sail SSE 15 nM to Aegiali in Amorgos 36°54.2′N, 25°58.5′E.
- From Aegiali a nice 28 nM E sail brings you to the delightful little island of Levitha 37°0.14′N, 26°28.06′E, inhabited by a single family.
- From Levitha sail SE 41 nM to the uninhabited small island of Yiali 36°39.87′N, 27°07.72′E.
- From Yiali you sail for 36 nM ESE to the pleasant and very secure anchorage of Panormitis in Symi 36°33.1′N, 27°50.5′E.
- From Panormitis Mandraki, Rhodes 36°27.3′N, 28°13.7′E is just a 22 nM sail SE. In Mandraki you can clear Greek Customs.
- Finally, from Mandraki you can sail NNE for 25 nM to Marmaris in Turkey 36°51′N, 28°16.5′E.
The total distance from Kalamaki Marina 37°54.7′N, 23°42.0′E along the route outlined above is:
- to Mandraki, Rhodes 36°27.3′N, 28°13.7′E - 273 nM
- to Marmaris, Turkey 36°51′N, 28°16.5′E - 298 nM
NW Going from Rhodes & Marmaris
The main goal of this route is to minimize exposure to headwinds and maximize the use of sails. Because of this, the route is more westerly during the passage through the Dodecanese and the Cyclades islands until the island of Sifnos in the eastern Cyclades. In that region the prevailing meltemi blows from the NE so you may be able to continue NW to the Attika Coast (Athens Region), if not, you can continue sailing in WNW direction towards the N coast of the Peloponnese and then in a more sheltered waters head N.
- Starting from Marmaris, Turkey sail SSW for 25 nM to Mandraki in Rhodes, Greece 36°27.3′N, 28°13.7′E where you can clear Greek Customs.
- From Mandraki sail 41 nM WSW to Livádia in Tilos 36°24.97′N, 27°23.2′E.
- Then, from Livádia sail 53 nM WNW to Maltezana Bay in remote island of Astypalea 36°34.5′N, 26°23.2′E.
- The fourth leg takes you 62 nM WNW from Maltezana Bay to Port Ios in the island of Ios in the Cyclades 36°43.4′N, 25°16.1′E.
- From Port Ios you sail NW for 33 nM to the very secure anchorage of Port Vathi in the island of Sifnos 36°55.7′N, 24°41.2′E.
- From Port Vathi you have two choices:
- If the meltemi is not very strong and you feel comfortable sailing north,
- sail NNW for only 17 nM to Koutala Bay in the island of Serifos 37°07.9′N, 24°27.4′E
- then, from Koutala Bay sail 21 nM N to Fikiada in Kythnos 37°24.7′N, 24°23′E which is a 44 nM sail ENE to Kalamaki Marina 37°54.7′N, 23°42.0′E or a 78 nM sail mostly E to the Corinth Canal 37°54.91′N, 23°0.61′E.
- With stronger winds continue in a westerly direction,
- sail 87 nM WNW to Leonidio in NE Peloponnese 37°08.7′N, 22°53.61′E
- then, 28 nM NE to Molos in the island of Hydra 37°19.6′N, 23°24.75′E which is then a 40 nM sail N to Kalamaki Marina 37°54.7′N, 23°42.0′E or 53 nM sail mostly NE to the Corinth Canal 37°54.91′N, 23°0.61′E.
- If the meltemi is not very strong and you feel comfortable sailing north,
The total distance to Kalamaki Marina 37°54.7′N, 23°42.0′E along the direct route via Koutala Bay outlined above is:
- From Mandraki, Rhodes, Greece 36°27.3′N, 28°13.7′E - 273 nM
- From Marmaris, Turkey 36°51′N, 28°16.5′E - 298 nM
While the total distance to Kalamaki Marina 37°54.7′N, 23°42.0′E along the indirect route via Leonidio in NE Peloponnese 37°08.7′N, 22°53.61′E is:
- From Mandraki, Rhodes, Greece 36°27.3′N, 28°13.7′E - 343 nM
- From Marmaris, Turkey 36°51′N, 28°16.5′E - 369 nM
Possible Arrival Ports
- Mandraki, Rhodes 36°27.3′N, 28°13.7′E
- Marmaris, Turkey 36°51′N, 28°16.5′E
- Marinas in the Attika Coast (Athens Region)
- Corinth Canal 37°54.91′N, 23°0.61′E
