The Gambia is a very small and narrow country whose borders mirror the meandering Gambia River. The country is less than 48 km wide at its widest point, with a total area of 11,300 km². Its present boundaries were defined in 1889 after an agreement between the United Kingdom and France. It is almost an enclave of Senegal, and is the smallest country on the continent of Africa.

Climate & Weather
The climate in The Gambia is tropical with two "seasons". The dry "season" is from November to May and the rest of the year is the wet "season". Hottest months are February to May and there are variable winds year round with the strongest winds in Sept/Oct.

Customs and Immigration
Customs
- Firearms and ammunition MUST be declared on arrival
- PETS: Pets should have a valid anti-rabies innoculation and current health certificates. You MUST notify the authorities about pets aboard.
Immigration
All nationals except those of Britain and Commonwealth countries, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain and Sweden require visas. Usually issued for 30 days these can be extended free of charge from the Immigration Office in Banjul. Obtain your visa from your nearest Gambian Office or representative. Nationals from neighbouring countries generally do not require a visa.
However, if arriving by yacht you can be granted a visa valid for 30 days and this visa can be extended for up to 3 months ($US10) at the Immigration Office at the corner of Anglesea and Dobson Street in Banjul.

- Take care against Cholera - treat all water.
