Lumbarda
| |
The tiny harbour of Tatinja is situated on the NE coast of the island of Korcula in Croatia, less than half a mile E of the marina of Marina Lumbarda. It offers a pleasant and cheaper alternative in settled weather to berthing in the marina and it is only a short walk around the coast to the facilities of Lumbarda itself. Shelter, however, is not at all good in winds from N round to E and the harbour should be avoided in any fresh to strong winds from those directions.

Weather
Diurnal winds among the islands are mostly moderate during the summer months, predominantly from NW and rarely exceeding force 4/5, although gusting is common in narrow channels between islands and on the lee side of headlands. At night, katabatic winds off the mountains affect some of the islands close to the mainland coast. During early spring and (especially) autumn conditions can be more unsettled, occasionally accompanied by violent thunderstorms - luckily of short duration - with winds of 30-35 knots or more and vicious, steep seas. In the winter the sudden, violent N wind off the mountains, the bora, is much to be feared, especially along the coast from Rijeka down to Zadar, although its effects can be felt as far south as Split.
Equally prevalent in winter - although not uncommon in summer - is the scirocco, a S/SE wind that blows up from North Africa, usually in advance of a depression moving E across the Mediterranean. Unlike the bora, the scirocco only occasionally exceeds gale force, but is still a phenomenon to be wary of, especially if on a lee coast.

Communication
Also see World Cruiser's Nets.
There are no dangers in the immediate approach, once past the numerous islets that fringe the NE coast of the island. The harbour is situated on the W side of a shallow peninsula that gives it some protection from SE. Depths in the approach are 6.0 - 8.0 metres and on the outer jetty range from 1.0 metre or less at the root to 4.0 metres at the end.
Entrance
Korcula Town is the nearest year-round port of entry.
Berthing
The only suitable berth for a visiting yacht is on the inside of the second, outer jetty, where there are depths of just under 4.0 metres at the end. Drop anchor in 3.0 - 4.0 metres and go bows or stern-to the end of the jetty. Most of the jetty is occupied by small craft on laid moorings, but it is possible to squeeze in with care near the end. Shelter here is only moderate and the harbour should only be used in settled weather. With any threat of fresh to strong N or E winds, a yacht should evacuate immediately.
Marinas & Yacht Clubs
None.
Anchorages
It is possible to anchor off W of the jetty in depths of 5.0 - 6.0 metres. The holding is good in sand and weed. Shelter is good in winds from W through S but poor with anything N or E in the wind.
