Vilagarcía de Arousa

|
Vilagarcia de Arousa, a town of 35,000 inhabitants, is situated on the eastern side of the wide inlet of the Ria de Arousa in NW Spain, 30 miles SW of the famous town of Santiago de Compostella. While the town itself is not particularly noteworthy, it has the benefit of a well-sheltered marina and is a good base for a visit to Santiago or for exploring the wonderful beaches of the Illa de Arousa.

Places to Visit
Trains depart several times a day for the town of Santiago de Compostella, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and centre of pilgrimage since the 9th century AD. The village of Carril five miles to the north of the marina is attractive, as is the island of Illa de Malveria Pequena just offshore. If you have bicycles aboard, the Illa de Arousa six miles to the south is idyllic, with dazzling white sandy beaches reminiscent of tropical isles. Access is via a long causeway from the eastern side of the Ria.
