Tasmania Cruising Guide
History and background
Originally known as Van Diemen's Land, Tasmania was set up as a British penal colony in 1803. Through the combination of introduced diseases and conflicts with the new arrivals the full-blooded indigenous population had died out by 1876 when the last of her kind, Truganini, passed away. Fanny Cochrane Smith (1834-1905) also laid claim to this title after Truganini's death, but her claim has been disputed.
Convicts who had served their time could apply for land grants and become farmers. Many had other ideas though, and quite a few ships were seized to be sailed to Chile, China and other places. The influx of convicts became heavier after 1840 when they were no longer being transported to New South Wales, peaking at 5,329 arrivals in the year 1842. In 1846 transportation was suspended for two years and the last convict ship, the St Vincent, arrived in 1853.
It was not until 1913 that the term 'free servitude' was expunged from official documents.
