The small harbour of Zavalatica is situated on the S coast of the island of Korcula in Croatia, three miles ENE of the harbour of Brna. The harbour is at the head of a S-facing inlet, partially protected by a breakwater extending from the W side of the inlet. It offers a useful port of call for yachts cruising the S coast of the island and has good shelter in all but S winds. However, mooring options are limited as the harbour is packed with moorings along most of its quayed area. swell.
Local Weather
Diurnal winds among the islands are mostly moderate during the summer months, predominantly from NW and rarely exceeding force 4/5, although gusting is common in narrow channels between islands and on the lee side of headlands. At night, katabatic winds off the mountains affect some of the islands close to the mainland coast. During early spring and (especially) autumn conditions can be more unsettled, occasionally accompanied by violent thunderstorms - luckily of short duration - with winds of 30-35 knots or more and vicious, steep seas. In the winter the sudden, violent N wind off the mountains, the bora, is much to be feared, especially along the coast from Rijeka down to Zadar, although its effects can be felt as far south as Split.
Equally prevalent in winter - although not uncommon in summer - is the scirocco, a S/SE wind that blows up from North Africa, usually in advance of a depression moving E across the Mediterranean. Unlike the bora, the scirocco only occasionally exceeds gale force, but is still a phenomenon to be wary of, especially if on a lee coast.

There are no dangers in the approach. The harbour is situated on the W side of a wooded peninsula, extensively developed with holiday homes, that protects it from E. Depths in the approach are 10.0 -12.0 metres and in the harbour range from 2.0 metres on the quays to 7.0 metres in the centre of the harbour.
Check-in facilities (for Customs and Immigration)
Korcula Town is the nearest year-round port of entry.
Berthing Options
The only suitable berth for a visiting yacht is on the inside of the breakwater jetty at the SW end of the harbour, where there is space for 4-5 yachts moored stern or bows-to using their anchors. Depths along the jetty range from 2.0 metres at the root to 6.0 metres at the outer end. In effect it is not possible to moor near the root as there are small craft moorings along the adjacent quay. If the harbour is quiet or outside the busy summer season it may be possible to lie alongside. There are a limited number of bollards on the jetty (just three), so it is easier lying alongside than on an anchor moor. Shelter on the jetty is good except in S winds, when there is an unpleasant swell in the harbour.
