Varazze
| |
Varazze is a small resort town on the Ligurian coast of Italy around five miles NE of Savona and 12 miles SW of Genoa. The town is popular with Italian tourists and the population of 14,00 swells to several times that during the holiday months of July and August. For yachtsmen, the town’s main attraction is its sheltered 700-berth marina, Varazze Marina, which provides a useful alternative to the busy harbours of Savona or Genoa a few miles along the coast.

Weather
The prevailing winds along the western part of the Ligurian coast during the summer are a SW or SE seabreeze, which rarely gets up much above force 4-5. Along the eastern part of the coast, the winds tend to come more from W or NW and are again usually little more than moderate. While infrequent, gales are not unknown during the spring and early summer and are typically caused by depressions further west in the Golfe du Lion which bring strong N winds as they move further E. In winter, the tramontana, a strong N wind off the Alps, is more frequent, although the libecchio is a strong SW wind that can affect the whole of the Ligurian coast and blow for several days, causing heavy seas.

Tourism
Although there are some pretty 15th and 16th century churches and remnant of the town’s mediaeval walls, the main attraction of Varazze is its beach and beachfront promenade. The Passeggiata Europa (Europa Walk) is a walking trail along the route of the former Genoa-Ventimiglia railway, connecting Varazze to the neighbouring town of Cogoleto. The path transits a rocky landscape thick with Aleppo pines and passes a series of small coves rich with birdlife.
